Looking for some television to watch while hunkered down in your cozy home? Here is a list of some of my favorite epic series to fill your time. These are BIG! These are romantic! These are sometimes violent. These will not disappoint!
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones (about 60 hours, 8 seasons) is TRULY and epic show. Much has been said about the final season of Game of Thrones. People loved it, people hated it. But regardless of how you felt about the end, this show is legendary. The series follows the books written by George R.. R. Martin and is based LOOSELY on the Wars of the Roses in England. The arc of the main characters over eight seasons is powerful. Iindividuals you dislike in the early seasons, you grow to love by season eight. The twists and turns take the viewer on a truly epic journey. And the dragons are pretty cool also! Available on HBO
Outlander
Outlander (about 31 hours through season 4) is based on the series written by Diana Gabaldon. It follows Claire Randall, who time travels back to Scotland in the mid 1700s. There she meets and falls in love with very good looking Jamie Fraser. Adventure, romance and intrigue ensue taking the pair from Scotland to Paris to the newly formed 13 colonies. It may sound somewhat silly – time traveling and all, but it is highly entertaining and will make you want to book a trip to Scotland. Available on Netflix and Starz
The White Queen
The White Queen (about 10 hours) centers on the stories of Elizabeth of York, Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville during the time of the Wars of the Roses in England. These three women were real women, caught up in the power struggle of men. The series follows them through marriages, death and duty. While being controlled by the men around them, they do quite a bit of manipulating themselves. The White Queen is not very historically accurate in many ways, it is entertaining and you will definitely enjoy. You will also be very glad you are living in 2020 as a woman and not the 1400s. Available on Starz
The White Princess
The White Princess (about 9 hours) picks up where The White Queen leaves off. Elizabeth of York’s daughter must marry the newly crowned King Henry VII, uniting the houses of Lancaster and York. Distrust and political plots threaten to destroy not only the marriage, but the country as well. Available on Starz
The Spanish Princess
The Spanish Princess (about 9 hours) follows The White Princess centering on the arrival of Catherine of Aragon and her relationship with the future King Henry VIII. It is a two part series, with only part one having aired thus far. It’s not as good as The White Queen and White Princess, but if you’ve come this far, you need to watch it. Available on Starz
The Tudors
The Tudors (about 38 hours) is historical fiction with an emphasis on fiction. The series centers on the reign of Henry VIII, starting with the end of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and follows him through the rise and demise of each wife that follows up through his death. It’s fluffy and entertaining. And while not very accurate, you will still learn a great deal and will probably want to read more about these fascinating figures. Jonathon Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill are also excellent eye candy starring as Henry VIII and his lifelong friend, Charles Brandon. Available on Netflix
Poldark
Poldark (about 39 hours, 5 seasons) is based on the books by Winston Graham and aired on PBS. It follows the title character upon his return to England after fighting in the American War for Independence. Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall to find his love marrying someone else and much drama ensues. Aidan Turner plays Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson (from The White Queen) plays his new love. Available on Amazon Prime
The Crown
The Crown (about 29 hours, 3 seasons) This Netflix series follows the current Queen Elizabeth of England and her immediate family. The series begins before she is crowned, as she marries Prince Philip. The most recent season, introduces us to the an adult Price Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles (but no Diana, yet). I have to say I enjoyed the first seasons more then the most recent. After viewing, I also have a deeper respect for the Queen and what she has experienced as monarch, as well as what her family goes through. All in all, it’s a fun watch. Available on Netflix
Victoria
Victoria (about 21 hours, 3 seasons) stars Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria. The series begins with Victoria learning she has become Queen. She must learn to navigate being a monarch, managing a very manipulative family and the expectations of who she should marry. I learned a great deal from watching this representation and it led me to want to know more about one of Britain’s greatest royals. There was a lot of intrigue back in the 1800s!! Available on PBS and Amazon Prime
There you have it. What epic shows do you enjoy? I’d also love to hear your thoughts on any of these if you’ve watched! Happy Viewing!
